US Plane Crash in Kentucky: At Least Seven Dead — Toll Expected to Rise

Updated: Nov 5, 2025 •

Summary: A UPS cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening. killing at least seven people and injuring more than a dozen. Kentucky officials warned the death toll could climb as emergency crews work through the wreckage and account for people in the area.

What happened

Officials say the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 cargo jet  operating from UPS’s Louisville hub and bound for Honolulu experienced a serious problem during takeoff, erupted into flames and crashed a short distance from the runway. Videos circulating online showed flames and a thick smoke plume before the aircraft descended and exploded on impact.

Casualties and injuries

State and local officials confirmed at least seven fatalities,  and people on the ground; authorities cautioned that the number is expected to rise as rescue teams continue searching the scene. Dozens more were treated for injuries, with some described as critical or “very significant.”

Immediate response

First responders, firefighters and multiple hospitals in the region mobilized to treat the injured and extinguish fires. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation and are coordinating the recovery and forensic work. Local officials ordered shelter-in-place notices for nearby neighborhoods while emergency operations were active.

Airport and UPS operations: Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport suspended all flights temporarily and UPS halted package sorting at its Worldport hub while authorities assess damage and safety. The closure affected hundreds of flights and the company’s immediate operations in the city.

What investigators will look for

The NTSB typically examines flight recorders, maintenance history, engine and airframe components, eyewitness accounts and air traffic control data. Early footage showed fire on the aircraft’s left wing/engine area during departure; investigators will analyze whether an engine failure, fuel issue, or other mechanical problem played a role.

How you can help

  • Follow guidance from local authorities (avoid the crash site, obey shelter orders, and allow emergency crews to work).
  • Donate to verified local relief funds or support services for families affected — check trusted local government or major nonprofit channels for vetted options.
  • If you have photos or video that might help investigators, contact local police or the NTSB’s public tips line rather than sharing widely on social media.

FAQ

Is this related to terrorism? There is no indication at this time that the crash was caused by an act of violence. Federal investigators will examine all possibilities.

Will flights resume? The airport was closed immediately after the crash. Officials reported plans to reopen after safety inspections and initial recovery work. But timelines may change. Follow the airport’s official communications for updates.
